In May of 2001 the Florida Concrete and Products Association (FCPA) held their normal monthly meeting in Orlando Florida. It was not a normal meeting as far as the state’s stucco industry is concerned. During this meeting, member company representatives began to address this very important but historically neglected segment of our business. The results of their discussion included a commitment to the preservation and promotion of the stucco industry in Florida and the formation of the first FCPA Stucco Committee. Original members included cement company technical, sales and field representatives, FCPA staff consultants and several independent consulting firms. Since that time we have met on an “as needed” basis but at least four times per year. We have worked hard usually behind the scenes, to promote and protect the integrity of our industry. Our many published tech bulletins are regularly referenced by contractors and designers. The four hour Advanced Stucco Seminar produced and instructed by our group offers CEU’s to industry professionals and addresses the many issues we face daily. Our affiliation with the Florida Wall and Ceiling Contractors Association allows us the opportunity to reach out to our industry at regional meetings throughout the state. We have conducted testing on stucco systems at the University of Florida in Gainesville and at the Masonry Institute in Virginia resulting in well-written documentation about water intrusion issues.
As you can see, we have been extremely active during the last eleven years and we are not done yet. In March of 2012 the FCPA approved our request to transition the “Stucco Committee” into The Florida Lath and Plaster Bureau. This will allow us to exponentially expand our efforts to support and promote the industry. We have taken a structured approach and have developed by-laws which will govern our organization and its membership. We are actively seeking membership and involvement of Contractors, Architects, Engineers, Consultants, Code Officials, Manufacturers and anyone else that is connected to the stucco industry in the state of Florida. Our industry is changing rapidly and we intend to be part of that change by addressing issues such as new technology, application techniques, government mandates, code changes, ASTM updates and the many other positive or negative topics that impact our livelihood. We will communicate additional updates as they become available and in closing we ask you to remember that life is all about choices. You can choose to lead, to follow, or to get out of the way. We have chosen to lead. |
